Healthcare providers are starting to realize that using electronic communication, collaboration, and social networks to keep in touch with each other and with patients can improve the quality of care they provide. However, it also exposes them to risk since the information they share on these networks has to be protected in order to meet specific regulatory guidelines, like those mandated by HIPAA. The prescription for success is to consider compliant use of these networks before and while they are being used and the technology that helps achieve that goal. Read this paper to gain an understanding of: What the regulatory landscape of the healthcare industry looks like What concerns you should be aware of from a legal perspective

Executives, managers, and users will not trust data unless they understand where it came from. Enterprise metadata is the “data about data” that makes this trust possible. Unfortunately, many healthcare and life sciences organizations struggle to collect and manage metadata with their existing relational and column-family technology tools. MarkLogic’s multi-model architecture makes it easier to manage metadata, and build trust in the quality and lineage of enterprise data. Healthcare and life sciences companies are using MarkLogic’s smart metadata management capabilities to improve search and discovery, simplify regulatory compliance, deliver more accurate and reliable quality reports, and provide better customer service. This paper explains the essence and advantages of the MarkLogic approach.

The use of wristbands to identify hospital patients has been a standard practice for well over half a century. Handwritten, typed or printed, wristbands were originally created to provide an easy way for caregivers to verify identity at any point along the patient’s healthcare journey. From newborns in the delivery area to geriatric patients in rehabilitation, everyone got a wristband. And that’s how things worked until the introduction of barcode technology. By putting barcodes on hospital wristbands, healthcare facilities can leverage a host of connected technologies to improve safety and quality of care. It’s also the most effective way to comply with the National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) to “Improve the accuracy of patient identification,” which the Joint Commission has included in its annual goals since 2003.

Mobile devices help clinicians improve the quality of patient care and save lives by improving staff communication and collaboration, and by providing instant access to a wealth of mission-critical information — from real-time lab results to a change in a patient’s condition or verification of the “5 rights” of medication administration at the patient bedside. In addition, mobility also helps healthcare organizations comply with important governmental and regulatory safety standards, without tasking an already overburdened nursing staff with additional paperwork. This white paper provides guidance for planning and implementing a clinical mobility solution in today’s healthcare environment, including a five-step roadmap to help key stakeholders identify needs.

A rehab program is only as good as its staff. Acquiring, retaining and keeping rehab talent engaged is critical for program effectiveness. Staffing issues can burden providers with additional costs and make it hard for them to deliver a consistently high quality of care, but there are key strategies to help relieve the staffing burden. The medical industry is facing a growing talent shortage. Recent estimates predict that America will be short of more than 130,000 doctors by 2025.1 Specialized departments will suffer especially high shortage rates. If healthcare providers want to minimize the impact of this shortage, they must optimize their recruitment and retention practices. This guide details the best strategies for making that happen.

Better health care at lower costs, for everyone – how do health care providers get there? Understanding the gaps in patient care, patient needs, and the geographic distribution of the patient population are important elements to consider when making decisions about improving the quality of care and reducing its costs. To effectively analyze gaps in patient care, the data needs to be in a single place or system. However, in many organizations, data is spread across a myriad of spreadsheets and database systems. Data not organized for visual exploration and coherent analysis isn’t useful for decision making. Hence the need for visually appealing and scalable analytical tools to help organizations be more efficient, effective and economically successful.
