Software drives competitive advantage more than ever at an increasing velocity for releases along with higher, overwhelming levels of deployment complexity. Dramatic growth in mobile applications, analytics, systems of engagement, and cloud demands that organizations respond adaptively, even as resource constraints make it challenging to nearly impossible to do so. As a result of these combined factors, IDC sees increased interest in, demand for, and adoption of agile approaches to development and also for business initiatives driving adoption of agile approaches to overall project, program, and portfolio management. As we receive inquiry on this area increasingly, it makes sense to assess this market.

Today, technology is all about enabling business. Organizations of many types and sizes are developing, upgrading or replacing mobile applications to reflect changes in the workplace. Across industries, employees are working more while mobile, using multiple devices. When they return to the office, they are capitalizing on more flexible work environments and approaches to work. Many organizations are facilitating this anytime, anywhere work with mobility initiatives that provide mobile devices or allow employees to use their own. They are also modifying workspace designs, creating mobile workstations and mobile “hot spots” to enable workers to easily connect to enterprise systems when they return to the office. Enabling employees to work better can help organizations boost productivity and improve customer service. Enabling the mobile workforce to be productive is the ultimate goal of any mobile business initiative. While the idea that mobile devices like the iPad, Galaxy Tab and today’s leading smartphones can change how users work in the enterprise is well established, the real challenge is how to enable a mobile workforce to have device access to all the different content they need to do their job without having to circumvent security and content governance objective or require users to learn a mix of consumer oriented software tools and work in different user interfaces in order to be productive. Viewing, editing, annotating and sharing content must be available from the same application.
