The quick-service restaurant industry continues to be a favorite among consumers who look to the sector for a wide variety of food served quickly and at a low price. The speed and efficiency of QSRs, which include the emergent “fast casual” restaurants, match today’s on-the-go lifestyle of consumers across all ages who often are too busy to cook at home. That said, consumers expect their dining experience at a QSR to be comfortable with conveniences ranging from WiFi connectivity to ordering kiosks and dining area entertainment on large screens or even tableside tablets. They expect the information on menu boards to be accurate and up-to-date and their meal orders to be fulfilled quickly and accurately. Technology is a major enabler in meeting consumers’ expectations while simultaneously helping QSR locations increase operational efficiencies and quality of service.

The media and entertainment industry was valued at $1.81 trillion in 2016, and is expected to reach $2.14 trillion by 2020. Activities within this industry have grown over the last couple of years, and now range from creating content for movies, TV and games, to delivering that content. This is increasingly performed via on-demand data networks rather than traditional over-the-air broadcasting, watched over high resolution displays that enhance the overall viewing experience of the user, and even the latter is being delivered from the same storage repositories. Media production is also now prevalent in areas not traditionally associated with this activity, such as training, museums, and education.

As schools look to blended learning as a solution to personalize and positively impact student achievement, the need to train and support teachers has become blatantly clear. Thus, districts and schools have allocated scarce resources to the process of onboarding and supporting teachers as new tools and platforms are introduced. However, school leaders and teachers often fail to recognize the need to similarly onboard and support students into new digital environments, instead trusting the inherent technological competencies of the “digital native” student. We are living in an age of explosive data growth. IDC projects that the digital universe is growing 50% a year, doubling in size every 2 years. In media and entertainment, the growth is even faster as capacity-intensive formats such as 4K, 8K, and 360/VR gain traction. Fortunately, new trends in data storage are making it easier to stay ahead of the curve. In this paper, we will examine how object storage stacks up against LTO tape for media archives and backup. In addition to a detailed total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis covering both capital and operational expenses, this paper will look at the opportunity costs of not leveraging the real-time data access of object storage to monetize existing data. Finally, we will demonstrate the validity of the analysis with a real-world case study of a longstanding network TV show that made the switch from tape to object storage. The limitations of tape storage go way beyond its lack of scalability. Data that isn’t searchable is becoming

Semiconductors run and connect today’s technology-driven world, powering all the electronic systems and products around us. Critical to communication, entertainment, work, medical diagnoses, travel, socializing, and making new discoveries, these specialized chips are ubiquitous. And chip designs grow ever more sophisticated in order to power new generations of devices, computers, the Internet, and the cloud. To enable new applications and use cases – like the Internet of Things – semiconductor vendors have continually pushed the boundaries of their designs to accommodate new fabrication processes that make chips smaller, more power efficient (to make personal devices last longer), and able to pack more gates into smaller dies (to make them more powerful).
