Today’s mega IT trends – cloud computing, big data, mobile and social media –have dramatically altered how enterprises work, requiring datacenters to find new, more flexible and cost effective ways to meet computing demands. For most datacenters, the path toward tomorrow's compute paradigm mandates an investment in standardization and consolidation as well as a more robust adoption of enterprise virtualization software, along with cloud system software to extend that virtualized infrastructure into a true private cloud environment. Linux has emerged as one of the key elements to a modernization program for a datacenter.

"VMware Horizon View is an enterprise-class desktop virtualization solution that delivers virtualized or remote desktops and applications to end users through a single platform. Horizon View is a tightly integrated, end-to-end solution built on the industry-leading virtualization platform, VMware vSphere. Although Horizon View enables levels of availability and agility of desktop services unmatched by traditional PCs, the complexity of deploying and managing thousands of virtual desktops in a VMware environment can be daunting without the right tools. Storage is often the leading cause of end-user performance problems. The NetApp all-flash FAS solution with the FAS8000 platform solves the performance problems commonly found in VDI deployments. In this reference architecture, NetApp tested VMware Horizon View user and administrator workloads to demonstrate how the NetApp all-flash FAS solution eliminates the most common barriers to virtual desktop adoption. As enterprises have embraced IT trends like cloud computing and virtualization, their operational needs have evolved to make application performance more important than ever before. But operating applications at peak performance is challenging in the cloud. That's why many enterprise IT departments now have Applications Operations groups tasked with ensuring that applications run efficiently across these complex IT stacks. But, most tools designed to address these application performance management (APM) issues were never designed for this dynamic environment. To achieve smooth delivery of applications at all times, Applications Operations groups need APM solutions that can give them insight and analytics to manage their apps. This SlashGuide gives IT managers a scorecard to identify APM solutions that will deliver more efficient application performance.

By now, much has been written about the advantages server virtualization brings to an enterprise. In the June 2013 survey, 63% of all companies and 100% of large enterprises reported having a server virtualization program. However, when you segment the virtualization rates, you find a trend that indicates that large enterprises in particular are not gaining all of the advantages that server virtualization has to offer. What is more difficult and remains a challenge, particularly for large enterprises, is virtualizing Tier 1 applications. These are large, mission-critical enterprise applications such as email, customer relationship management (CRM), or enterprise resource planning (ERP). These applications tend to be very large, consume the entire capacity of a current generation server, and require high application uptimes. As shown in Figure 1, the virtualization rates for these applications are far lower than Tier 2 apps. In this eBook, you’ll learn how the NEC enterprise server provides a platform that now gives customers the right platform to virtualize their Tier 1 apps.

To respond to rapid business environmental changes, enterprises are now adopting a more agile and services-oriented model for centralized IT, often characterized as “private cloud.” Public cloud service providers have become adept at adding new customers, new applications, and more compute-intensive workloads with minimal delay. While traditional enterprise IT may not be able to fully emulate this model, they can use virtualization – both at the levels of servers and storage – to come as close to the cloud as possible. Read this Evaluator Group paper to learn how HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage platforms can be foundational to developing IT agility.

New ways of working call for new ways of managing risk. Mobility, flexwork, bring-your-own device (BYOD) and increased collaboration across organizations have changed the risk profile and undermine existing IT architectures. The challenge is to allow people the flexibility they need for optimal business productivity while ensuring the security and compliance required by the enterprise. This paper describes how desktop virtualization can help regain control and reduce risk without sacrificing business productivity and growth.
