It’s your first cruise vacation and you’re ready to board. You check one last time to be sure the smart wristband the cruise line sent you last week is securely fastened. Then you join the rest of the crowd on the dock. As you calculate which boarding line is shortest, a crew member glances at your wristband and directs you to a special entrance. No waiting. Once at your room, a sensor verifies the ID in your device and the door opens automatically, saving you from having to juggle bags to find a key.

Departments of roads and highways around the world have begun to implement technology solutions to improve the safety of their highways, lessen congestion and manage traffic more efficiently. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), as these systems are known, require reliable, secure and scalable networks to link cameras, sensors, signage, signaling and vehicles to remote data centers and operation centers. These networks will be deployed in harsh environments and will pose their own unique challenges to operate, maintain and manage. In this application note, we will present the unique requirements of ITS networks and discuss how AlcatelLucent Enterprise products and technologies not only meet today’s ITS requirements, but are designed to grow and scale to meet tomorrow’s as well.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is composed of sensor-embedded devices and machines that exchange data with each other and the cloud through a secure network. Often referred to as “things” or “edge devices”, these intelligent machines connect to the internet either directly or through an IoT gateway, enabling them to send data to the cloud. Analyzing this data can reveal valuable insights about these objects and the business processes they’re part of, helping enterprises optimize their operations. Devices in IoT deployments can span nearly any industry or use case. Each one is equipped with sensors, processing power, connectivity, and software, enabling asset control and other remote interactions over the internet. Unlike traditional IT assets, these edge devices are resource-constrained (either by bandwidth, storage, or processing power) and are typically found outside of a data center, creating unique security and management considerations.

IoT describes a system where items in the physical world, and sensors within or attached to these items, are connected to the Internet via wireless and wired Internet connections. These sensors can use various types of local area connections such as RFID, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee. Sensors can also have wide area connectivity such as GSM, GPRS, 3G, and LTE.

The Internet of Everything (IoE) is a continuous interaction among people, processes, data, and things. Sensors, networks, and smart devices are ubiquitous, providing a torrent of streaming data or big data. The Internet of Things (IoT), which is a network of physical objects accessed through the Internet that can sense and communicate, is a component of IoE. Cisco is helping customers and strategic partners leverage the full potential of IoE to achieve radical results across all sectors and industries. Indeed, IoE is capable of helping public safety and justice agencies increase cost efficiency, improve safety and security, provide better response times, and increase productivity.

Smart technologies are a force multiplier for public safety agencies, allowing them to serve growing populations even as public spending remains constrained. The Internet of Everything (IoE) provides the connective tissue in this evolving operational environment — not only bringing together objects embedded with electronics, software and sensors, but making them work together in the service of better policing. The IoE makes it possible to collect data and share it via the cloud, uniting disparate jurisdictions, agencies and ranks of command in positive ways. These smart and connected technologies promote collaboration and transparency among public safety agencies, revolutionizing how police, fire, courts and corrections do some of the nation’s most important work.

Higher education has come under increasing scrutiny as never before due to rising costs, changes in future job requirements, and new forms of learning opportunities offered by non-traditional companies and institutions. Students and parents are rightfully questioning the value of higher education based on perceived outcomes as well as staggering student loans that in some cases could take a lifetime to pay back. While the value equation debate rages on, there is another phenomenon taking place. It is nothing short of a revolution regarding the advances in technology and how institutions of higher learning along with nontraditional organizations are utilizing these powerful new tools. These new tools include new mobile devices, enhanced and feature-rich learning management systems, data-feeding sensors, 3D printers, smart classrooms, smart buildings, and collaboration tools allowing students and faculty to collaborate just about anywhere face-to-face, virtually.

Companies rely on an expanding set of applications to compete in today's rapidly evolving business environment: - They rely on a fast-growing array of applications and devices (email, collaboration tools, and smartphones/tablets) to communicate and conduct business with customers and business partners. - They are creating, collecting, and repurposing large, unstructured data sets in life sciences, geophysics, media, and manufacturing. - They are collecting, storing, and analyzing more social and sensor-generated data about environments, products, customers, and transactions. The promise of better and faster data-driven decision making based on all this information is pushing big data and analytics (BDA) technology to the top of executive agendas. To succeed, CIOs must place a laserlike investment focus on datacenter solutions that allow them to deliver scalable, reliable, and flexible infrastructure for fast-growing BDA environments. Today’s corporate networks are more important to business objectives than ever before. Consequently, greater amounts of sensitive data traverse both wired and wireless networks. This plethora of valuable data in today's enterprise attracts an increasing number of hackers and malware applications. However, the inherent connected intelligence and distributed nature that makes the network a treasure trove for cybercriminals can also empower the network to be a proactive security tool. Through traffic visibility, and segmentation, today's enterprise network can prove itself to be a sensor and enforcer for security.

When it comes to longevity, nobody can hold a candle to Dell. Not only do our machines have the capability, manageability and security features that are trusted by IT, but they are designed for long lifecycles, thereby reducing waste and recycling costs. Small wonder they’ve been around for so long. That’s the past, but what about the futuristic features? Latitude 7400 2-in-1 uses Dell’s new ExpressSign-in to detect users’ presence, wake the system in about one second, and scan for facial recognition to log them in with Windows Hello. Users can just sit down at their desk and start working – without control-alt-delete or even reaching for the power button. In fact, it is the world’s first PC to use a proximity sensor enabled by Intel® Context Sensing Technology. When users step away for a break, Latitude will recognize they’ve left and lock itself to preserve battery life and maintain security.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly transformed the digital landscape and the world we live in. Intelligent devices and sensors connect smart cars, robotic manufacturing equipment, smart medical equipment, smart cities, industrial control systems, and much more in a way that improves lives and saves businesses billions of dollars. But along with its benefits, rapid IoT growth introduces a new dimension of security vulnerabilities that dramatically escalates the nature and seriousness of cybercrime risks. In addition to traditional confidentiality cyber risks, IoT threats include attacks that can: • Render smart appliances useless • Shut down city power grids • Threaten lives through hacked pacemakers and other medical devices. Such security flaws not only endanger lives, frustrate customers, and disrupt business operations, but they create significant cost and public relations damage for IoT developers and manufacturers.
