Just “keeping the lights on” in the server room is highly complex and largely inefficient. Maintaining IT infrastructure, system interdependencies, and application interoperability tie up valuable personnel and resources. The old way of simply throwing more hardware capacity at a problem can only serve to increase the complexity and further dampen productivity. In a perfect world, the infrastructure—hardware and software—would have been built as an integrated but scalable unit from the ground up. In our world, though, the best new systems combine independent pieces of IT infrastructure to form simplified computing platforms, freeing up IT to focus on business innovation rather than infrastructure management. Welcome to the new world of IT.

Most enterprise datacenters are so cluttered with individually constructed servers, including database servers, that staff time is largely taken up with just the maintenance of these systems. As a result, IT service to business users suffers, and the agility of the enterprise suffers. Integrated systems represent an antidote to this problem. By dramatically reducing the amount of setup and maintenance time for the applications and databases they support, integrated systems enable the technical staff to spend more of their time supporting users and enabling the enterprise to thrive.

Data that once lived in basements and backrooms is being moved to cloud-based servers and SaaS applications. Historically, data backup has always been a key component of any IT strategy – whether it was stored on floppy disks, duplicate servers, or in custom built applications. With this shift to the cloud, backup shouldn’t be taken out of the strategy; rather, it should be re-thought to be more adaptable and cost-effective –the same reason you moved to the cloud in the first place.

The benefits of moving to the cloud are numerous. Someone else now handles server and application setup, configuration, and system management, reducing personnel costs and increasing convenience and access for your employees. Microsoft Office 365 and Google Apps for Business are both comprehensive office productivity and communication tools for businesses looking to move to the cloud. But the two solutions have significant differences. This resource provides a breakdown of the differences and demonstrates each solution’s strengths to help guide decision-makers based on their company’s priorities and needs.

The discovery of the Heartbleed bug in April, 2014 exposed a serious vulnerability in OpenSSL, an open-source cryptographic library often used with applications and web servers like Apache and Nginx. This latest high profile, targeted attack allowed infiltrators access to the memory of web servers running vulnerable versions of the library. Heartbleed quickly compromised the privacy for communications applications on the Web such as e-commerce, banking, email, and instant messaging, and opened the door to the interception of user information, passwords, and identities. While the world now knows of the widespread havoc Heartbleed has caused to both businesses and individuals, it begs the question, “What happens when the next Heartbleed (or worse) comes along, and what can an organization do to weather yet another chapter in an all-too-familiar string of debilitating attacks?

Server virtualization is revolutionizing the datacenter by making applications mobile, increasing application uptime, and allowing IT admins to allocate computing resources more efficiently. The technology has been deployed widely enough that the role of the computer server has evolved from directly hosting operating systems and applications to hosting fully virtualized environments. Server that can support more virtualized machines (VMs - complete application stacks) allow their users to gain higher return on their IT investments. Private Cloud can extend the virtualization benefits in ways that broaden the benefits of virtualization to all parts of the organization. In this white paper, you will learn how Corporate IT uses these tools to meet the increasing demand for IT services.

By now, much has been written about the advantages server virtualization brings to an enterprise. In the June 2013 survey, 63% of all companies and 100% of large enterprises reported having a server virtualization program. However, when you segment the virtualization rates, you find a trend that indicates that large enterprises in particular are not gaining all of the advantages that server virtualization has to offer. What is more difficult and remains a challenge, particularly for large enterprises, is virtualizing Tier 1 applications. These are large, mission-critical enterprise applications such as email, customer relationship management (CRM), or enterprise resource planning (ERP). These applications tend to be very large, consume the entire capacity of a current generation server, and require high application uptimes. As shown in Figure 1, the virtualization rates for these applications are far lower than Tier 2 apps. In this eBook, you’ll learn how the NEC enterprise server provides a platform that now gives customers the right platform to virtualize their Tier 1 apps.

In the 1990s, client/server was the predominant architecture used to build business applications. The applications had rich functionality, were responsive, and satisfied users' needs. Client/server worked in a time where the only networks were the ones owned and controlled by the enterprise and the only user base was internal.
