Labeling blood and other samples at the time they are collected improves patient safety and helps prevent a host of problems related to misidentification — including many of the estimated 160,900 adverse events that occur in U.S. hospitals annually because of sample identification errors.1 There is a strong and growing body of evidence within medical literature that creating specimen identification labels on demand at the patient bedside with a mobile printer can significantly reduce errors. The Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) for 2010 advocate the use of two patient-specific identifiers, such as name and birthdate, whenever taking blood or other samples from a patient, and to label the sample collection container in the presence of the patient. Producing specimen labels at the patient bedside and encoding patient identification in a barcode satisfies both The Joint Commission’s NPSG and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements. "Healthcare organizations have significantly more to consider than the average business when it comes to network and device security. Concern over code modification, key compromise, password-based vulnerabilities and man-in-the-middle attacks have caused hospital CIOs and CISOs to rethink their security strategies and investments. The threat to these devices has even been assigned its own term: medjacking, a shortened form of “medical device hijacking.” Download this white paper for five best practices to mitigate threat and attacks that can put lives, patient trust and the growth of the healthcare organization at risk. The Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly transformed the digital landscape and the world we live in. Intelligent devices and sensors connect smart cars, robotic manufacturing equipment, smart medical equipment, smart cities, industrial control systems, and much more in a way that improves lives and saves businesses billions of dollars. But along with its benefits, rapid IoT growth introduces a new dimension of security vulnerabilities that dramatically escalates the nature and seriousness of cybercrime risks. In addition to traditional confidentiality cyber risks, IoT threats include attacks that can: • Render smart appliances useless • Shut down city power grids • Threaten lives through hacked pacemakers and other medical devices. Such security flaws not only endanger lives, frustrate customers, and disrupt business operations, but they create significant cost and public relations damage for IoT developers and manufacturers.

Founded in 2000, Trupanion is a Seattle-based company that provides allinclusive medical insurance policies for pet owners. A challenge for insurance companies is the need to quickly process claims to determine whether a claim should be paid automatically. In the comparatively small world of medical insurance for cats and dogs, however, only about 1% of pet owners hold insurance policies. Most veterinarians expect pet owners to cover the full bill for their pets’ treatment, making the insurance claims process a manual and time-consuming effort.

Opioid use grabs headlines when important celebrities overdose. Prince is sadly the most recent. But the problem is persistent and pervasive. The marginally good news is that the number of opioid prescriptions written started to decline last year. Overdose deaths, however, continued to rise. Also in the news have been lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies and distributors for helping to create the astounding oversupply of opioids, but the root causes go deeper. Physicians and their patients, medical policy makers and licensing boards, pharma companies and pharmacies all have played roles. And all must work together to stem the opioid epidemic and achieve the fundamental objectives of reducing addiction and deaths.

Imagine getting into your car and saying, “Take me to work,” and then enjoying an automated drive as you read the morning news. We are getting very close to that kind of scenario, and companies like Ford expect to have production vehicles in the latter part of 2020. Driverless cars are just one popular example of machine learning. It’s also used in countless applications such as predicting fraud, identifying terrorists, recommending the right products to customers at the right time, and correctly identifying medical symptoms to prescribe appropriate treatments. The concept of machine learning has been around for decades. What’s new is that it can now be applied to huge quantities of data. Cheaper data storage, distributed processing, more powerful computers and new analytical opportunities have dramatically increased interest in machine learning systems. Other reasons for the increased momentum include: maturing capabilities with methods and algorithms refactored to run in memory; the
