A paradigm shift is underway in the cybersecurity industry. Cybersecurity professionals are moving from a focus on attacker prevention to attacker detection. Preventing the “bad guys” from getting in is still important, but cyber adversaries are increasingly able to bypass even the most sophisticated network defenses. Once inside, it is more important than ever to find these attackers fast, before their activities get buried in the daily volume and pulse of network communications. This is where security analytics holds promise. Security analytics provides the necessary and timely visibility into normal and abnormal network behavior. This visibility enables devices and entities acting suspiciously to be quickly identified and investigated.

The rising intensity and sophisticated nature of cyber-attacks has created a precarious environment for businesses charged with protecting their customers’ personal data. In 2012, credit card and debit card fraud resulted in losses amounting to $11.27 billion. In January 2014 alone, a single cyber-attack exposed more than 105 million identities. To steal this data, one option is to target the point at which a retailer first acquires that card data – the Point-of-Sale (PoS) system. PoS systems are increasingly being targeted by these attackers, which is why it's more important than ever to protect these devices and the systems they are connected to. Read more into the research on these attacks in this Symantec Security Response special report.

An ongoing cyberespionage campaign against a range of targets, mainly in the energy sector, gave attackers the ability to mount sabotage operations against their victims. The attackers, known to Symantec as Dragonfly, managed to compromise a number of strategically important organizations for spying purposes and, if they had used the sabotage capabilities open to them, could have caused damage or disruption to energy supplies in affected countries. Read more into the research on these attacks in this Symantec Security Response special report.

Globally, sophisticated cyber-attacks are compromising organizations at an unprecedented rate and with devastating consequences. Modern attackers, including criminal organizations, ideological groups, nation states and other advanced threat actors are motivated by a wide range of objectives that include financial gain, industrial espionage, cyber-warfare, and terrorism. Thanks to numerous, headline-making incidents in recent years, cybercrime has risen toward the top of the concern list for many organizations—and the customers with whom they do business. You’ve heard many of the stories. Major health insurers, such as Anthem, Premera BlueCross and CareFirst had personal information for millions of their customers stolen. Sony Pictures experienced a breach that not only embarrassed employees and adversely impacted the release of the high-profile film, “The Interview,” but also damaged systems and applications—making it extremely difficult for the company to conduct business. The list goes on. Some you maybe haven’t heard, like the one about CodeSpaces, a provider of version management services to developers. When attackers were able to gain access to its cloud-based management consoles, they deleted the company’s entire infrastructure and backups—ultimately forcing CodeSpaces out of business. The bad news for organizations like yours is, thanks to the

A dversaries, and cybercriminal organizations in particular, are building tools and using techniques that are becoming so difficult to detect that organizations are having a hard time knowing that intrusions are taking place. Passive techniques of watching for signs of intrusion are less and less effective. Environments are complicated, and no technology can find 100 percent of malicious activity, so humans have to “go on the hunt.” Threat hunting is the proactive technique that’s focused on the pursuit of attacks and the evidence that attackers leave behind when they’re conducting reconnaissance, attacking with malware, or exfiltrating sensitive data. Instead of just hoping that technology flags and alerts you to the suspected activity, you apply human analytical capacity and understanding about environment context to more quickly determine when unauthorized activity occurs. This process allows attacks to be discovered earlier with the goal of stopping them before intruders are able t

In our first cyber security checklist, we provided a security overview and best practices to help organizations prevent an initial compromise from occurring. In this guide, we will help you understand practical steps you can take to mitigate techniques attackers use once they have penetrated your defenses. Once attackers have access to a machine, they can evade detection by using fileless techniques and legitimate system administration tools to do their dirty work. With this checklist, you will have a guide to help mitigate the impact of an attacker. Lastly, we will hep you understand how partnering with a company like Alert Logic can provide better defenses to stop attackers in their tracks. This checklist helps to explain how to: • How to manage and limit PowerShell access • Securing and utilizing Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) • Ways to apply application controls • Following the principle of least privilege and applying access controls • What to monitor for to help uncover
