Enterprises are leveraging advancements in what IDC calls “3rd Platform” technologies — cloud, Big Data, mobility, and social — to create new business opportunities and gain competitive advantage. These trends are putting more pressure on IT organizations to transform their datacenter operations to better support business initiatives aimed at reducing costs, increasing revenue, and strengthening customer relationships. This has driven increased demand for converged or integrated systems that provide the tools needed to reduce capital costs, improve operational efficiencies and, ultimately, increase agility within the datacenter.

This assessment is composed of a core set of comparative questions, and the option to be assessed in any of three key areas: computing economics, service delivery and business performance. After a half-decade of cost cutting and shrinking IT budgets, the compute infrastructure that powers the enterprise now is typically inefficient, slow and not optimized for business outcomes. It is better suited to the economic realities of 2010 rather than the rigors of the application workloads, delivery models & business expectations of today driven by cloud, mobility, security and big data megatrends. As a result, there is a significant gap between what businesses expect from technology and what IT can deliver.

Data is the lifeblood of your business. To compete in today’s global information economy, you need to keep your IT systems up and running and provide consistent and reliable access to business-critical applications at all times. Application downtime or slow performance can mean diminished employee productivity, dissatisfied customers, and lost revenue. But keeping pace with change and managing growth can be a real challenge. Increasing numbers of applications, evolving technology, and rapid data growth are pushing older IT infrastructure to the limit—demanding more storage and bandwidth, greater security and agility, and higher availability than ever before.

While just about everyone is writing about how IT and the businesses it serves need to be transformed, the actual industry answers to both digital and IT transformation remain unclear at best. Are transformational initiatives all about analytics and big data? Or are they about the move to cloud in all its varieties? Support for mobile? More agile ways of working and developing software? Or are they actually all about crafting teams to promote more proactive dialog between the business and IT? The truth is, of course, digital and IT transformation depend on all of the above and more. They also depend on a resilient infrastructure that’s easily adapted to changing business priorities without requiring long hours spent on maintenance, updates, and addressing problems of service availability. But making all this work clearly and cohesively is far beyond the purview of almost any solution today—whether from a software management perspective or from a hardware infrastructure perspective.

If your business uses a three-tier architecture with disaggregated servers, storage, and SAN to run applications, you might be considering upgrading to an integrated solution to streamline your business. However, implementing a hyperconverged Dell EMC XC Series cluster powered by Nutanix software is an even more attractive option that can provide over 73 percent greater database performance - an advantage that translates to 50 percent greater database performance per dollar than a traditional integrated solution.

For many companies the appeal of the public cloud is very real. For tech startups, the cloud may be their only option, since many don’t have the capital or expertise to build and operate the IT systems their businesses need. Existing companies with established data centers are also looking at public clouds, to increase IT agility while limiting risk. The idea of building-out their production capacity while possibly reducing the costs attached to that infrastructure can be attractive. For most companies the cloud isn’t an “either-or” decision, but an operating model to be evaluated along with on-site infrastructure. And like most infrastructure decisions the question of cost is certainly a consideration. In this report we’ll explore that question, comparing the cost of an on-site hyperconverged solution with a comparable set up in the cloud. The on-site infrastructure is a Dell EMC VxRailTM hyperconverged appliance cluster and the cloud solution is Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Technology is quickly moving to the forefront of business priorities as organizations undertake digital and IT transformation projects that enable strategic differentiation in a world where users leverage applications and data in new ways. Organizations in all industries must better align with changing customer preferences to avoid being disrupted by a new crop of nimble competitors. Technology will increasingly determine how businesses define and distinguish themselves in the market. IDC has noted that most organizations were not born digital but instead have legacy business processes, applications, and infrastructure that require modernization and automation. As a result, businesses must embark on an IT transformation initiative to modernize and automate their legacy infrastructure to prime themselves to achieve their digital business goals and initiatives. IDC’s research has shown the movement of most IT workloads to the cloud in the coming years. Yet, with all the talk about enterprises moving to the cloud, some of them still wonder if such a move is really cost effective and what business benefits may result. While the answers to such questions vary from workload to workload, one area attracting particular attention is that of the data warehouse. Many enterprises have substantial investments in data warehousing, with an ongoing cost to managing that resource in terms of software licensing, maintenance fees, operational costs, and hardware. Can it make sense to move to a cloud-based alternative? What are the costs and benefits? How soon can such a move pay itself off? Download now to find out more.

Defining the Data Lake “Big data” is an idea as much as a particular methodology or technology, yet it’s an idea that is enabling powerful insights, faster and better decisions, and even business transformations across many industries. In general, big data can be characterized as an approach to extracting insights from very large quantities of structured and unstructured data from varied sources at a speed that is immediate (enough) for the particular analytics use case.

Cyber attackers are targeting the application programming interfaces (APIs) used by businesses to share data with customers. Consumer mobile adoption, electronic goods and services, and high volumes of data have led businesses to use APIs for data exchange. Unfortunately, attackers can also use APIs to access or deny service to valuable data and systems. This white paper explores strategies for protecting APIs. You’ll learn about APIs, how and why these endpoints are targets for web application attacks, security models, and how Akamai can help.
