"The fast pace of innovation demanded by today’s digital businesses challenges traditional processes for the deployment and governance of application delivery and supporting infrastructure. To address the increased pace of change, many organizations are transforming by adopting DevOps: a set of practices which employs continuous integration processes, breaking down the silos between development and operations teams. As cycle times accelerate, and development teams adopt more Agile delivery methodologies, the traditional model for application security can be a drag on the speed and agility inherent in a continuous integration process. This creates a natural friction. Security teams can be perceived as slowing down or blocking delivery. At the same time, however, the apps are exposed to significant threats. The goal of continuous integration is to deliver more frequent releases with more new capabilities to market, faster. It’s all about speed."

The ever-rising tide of demands on IT organizations is creating constant pressure on their leaders to upgrade or replace their outmoded legacy systems with new infrastructure technologies that will allow them to keep pace with the speed of business. It is no longer sufficient to manage basic business applications and resources such as ERP, email, and silos of heterogeneous data. The bar has been raised higher than ever, and the role of IT is evolving to meet it. As a result, IT must support applications and services that make it possible for the business to provide new, diverse customer experiences while generating expanding revenues via the emergent crown jewels of business: big data, cloud, and mobility.

The demands on IT today are staggering. Most organizations depend on their data to drive everything from product development and sales to communications, operations, and innovation. As a result, IT departments are charged with finding a way to bring new applications online quickly, accommodate massive data growth and complex data analysis, and make data available 24 hours a day, around the world, on any device. The traditional way to deliver data services is with separate infrastructure silos for various applications, processes, and locations, resulting in continually escalating costs for infrastructure and management. These infrastructure silos make it difficult to respond quickly to business opportunities and threats, cause productivity-hindering delays when you need to scale, and drive up operational costs.

Business Enterprises today need to become more agile, meet new and increasing workload and security requirements, while reducing overall IT cost and risk. To meet these requirements many companies are turning to cloud computing. To remain competitive companies need to formulate a strategy that can easily move them from traditional on-premises IT to private or public clouds. A complete cloud strategy will likely include both private and public clouds because some applications and data might not be able to move to a public cloud. Moving to the cloud should not create information silos but should improve data sharing. Any cloud strategy should make sure that it is possible to integrate on-premises, private cloud and public cloud data and applications. Furthermore, any on-premises cloud deployments must be able to easily migrate to public cloud in the future

Cloud adoption is an evolutionary process that has been leading to hybrid clouds—specifically, open hybrid clouds that provide for portability of applications and data. This new model means avoiding new points of proprietary lock-in and new silos, and breaking from proprietary software and hardware.

Extending DevOps to mainframe applications and teams is essential towards the agility and velocity that enterprises require to remain innovative in today’s turbulent digital business environment. Talking Points: • For enterprises with mainframes, trying to achieve the benefits of Digital Transformation without dealing with existing mainframe assets is a fool’s errand. • Breaking down silos and moving to DevOps is central to what it means to undergo Digital Transformation. • Including the mainframe in modern software development approaches can improve quality overall, reduce test cycles and deployment timeframes, and ensure mainframe-based applications support the end-to-end performance requirements that today’s customers demand.

The rise of virtualization as a business tool has dramatically enhanced server and primary storage utilization. By allowing multiple operating systems and applications to run on a single physical server, organizations can significantly lower their hardware costs and take advantage of efficiency and agility improvements as more and more tasks become automated. This also alleviates the pain of fragmented IT ecosystems and incompatible data silos. Currently, this virtualization juggernaut shows no sign of slowing. As businesses recognize the potential for increased reliability and scalability offered by virtual technology, they are ramping up their investments in data center modernization and upgrading. In fact, 33 percent of the respondents to a recent ESG survey on cloud usage said that making greater use of server virtualization was one of their top five spending priorities for the next 12 to 18 months.

The increasing pressure on IT teams to maintain business continuity and information governance are changing how businesses view infrastructure resiliency and long-term data retention—they are consequently looking to new solutions to ensure immediate availability and complete protection of the

Today, organizations are collecting data at every level of their business and in volumes that in the past were unimaginable. Data sets are stored in different database systems or in files with distinctive formats, all reflecting business process, application, program software, or information type dependencies. Adding to this complexity is the distribution of these data sets across the enterprise in silos requiring a varied set of tools and/or specialized business rules for data transformation, classification, matching, and integration. Because of the massive amounts of data stored in a variety of representation formats, decision makers strain to derive insights and create business solutions that adequately span and integrate information from these disparate technology islands. Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) has conducted extensive research investigating the integration and management challenges created by the convergence of on-premise and public Cloud hosted applications. Research conducted in mid-2012 uncovered some compelling statistics about the role of Cloud integration in today's companies: Nearly 50% of the companies surveyed have already deployed tiered transactions spanning public Cloud and on-premise computing environments (one form of "hybrid Cloud") Approximately 35% have integrated (or are in the process of integrating) multiple Software as a Service (SaaS) applications. As one IT professional put it, "Everything is connected to everything." Because of this fact, any discussionof public Cloud as a standalone technology is outmoded. Few modern on-premise applications exist as"silos," and the same is true of Cloud-delivered applications.

Gaining a more complete, trusted view of customers is a strategic goal of most organizations. The challenge is that information about customers is typically managed and stored in many different applications, management systems and data silos. And this challenge is often compounded by a lack of consistency from one application to the next. The combination of IBM InfoSphere Data Explorer and IBM InfoSphere Master Data Management addresses these challenges by creating a single, combined, trusted 360-degree view of all data related to customers, accounts, products and other entities. The combined solution enables organizations to gain a deeper understanding of customer sentiment, increase customer loyalty and satisfaction, and get the right information to the right people to provide customers what they need to solve problems, cross-sell and up-sell.

In today’s highly competitive business environment, many organizations are expanding through mergers and acquisitions (M&As). Unfortunately, success comes at a cost. Growth via M&A activity often involves absorbing disparate ERP applications, which, over time, can create significant inefficiencies — particularly in the accounts payable (AP) department. The good news is, AP automation is emerging as an end-to-end solution that forward-thinking organizations can use to eliminate AP-related silos and maximize their market potential. Businesses with a complex ERP environment have several choices when it comes to AP automation solutions. This white paper is intended to assist AP and finance leaders, along with ERP system administrators, in evaluating their options, simplifying the decision-making process, and getting the absolute most out of their AP automation investment.
