Applications like Data Warehousing, High Performance Computing and Media/Entertainment have a reputation for demanding high sequential bandwidth. The conventional wisdom has always been to direct the sequential bandwidth that these applications generate to hard disk drives instead of solid state drives, and to use solid state drives for small random I/O use cases. These assumptions were made when solid state storage was relatively small in capacity and expensive in price. With flash based systems now commonly in the TBs of capacity and rapidly becoming more affordable, it may be time to look at using solid state storage with high bandwidth applications.
